Ross Mirkarimi has called San Francisco home for 27 years. A graduate of San Francisco's Police Academy, Mirkarimi served nine years as an armed San Francisco District Attorney Investigator. Elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2004, and re-elected in 2008 with 77 percent of the vote, Mirkarimi has authored over 80 ordinances that have had both citywide and national impact.
Mirkarimi was born in Chicago to an Iranian father and a mother of Russian descent. He received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from St. Louis University, a Master's degree in International Economics from Golden Gate University, and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science from the University of San Francisco.
Mirkarimi has been a vocal supporter of the Iranian American community in California. He introduced a resolution in an effort to ensure that Iranian Americans are not discriminated against in the City of San Francisco after a delegation of Iranians from Iran and Europe were detained at the airport. As a supervisor, Mirkarimi has authored myriad resolutions calling attention to the respect for human rights in Iran as well urging San Francisco’s representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives to co-sponsor H.R. 267, which recognizes Nowruz and thanks Iranian Americans for their many contributions to American society.
San Francisco Sheriff Mike Hennessey, Police Commission President Thomas Mazzucco, and the San Francisco Democratic Party, are among the many community leaders, public officials, and organizations that have endorsed Mirkarimi’s campaign. "When he took office in 2005, District Five ... was plagued with violent crime. He personally appeared at every homicide scene, pushed for more police on the streets and for foot patrols and worked to organize the community around crime -- and it worked. The murder rate dropped dramatically," explained the San Francisco Bay Guardian in a ringing endorsement of Mirkarimi’s campaign.
