Niki Tsongas Elected to Congress

Lowell, MA– IAPAC candidate Niki Tsongas, wife of the late U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas, was elected to the U.S. Congress yesterday in a race to fill Representative Marty Meehan’s seat in the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts. Meehan resigned his seat to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Tsongas defeated Republican Jim Ogonowski, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, in the October 16, 2007 special election by a margin of 51-45%.

An accomplished attorney, Tsongas has a law degree from Boston University and started Lowell’s first all-female law practice. She has spent decades working as Director of External Affairs at Middlesex Community College -- the largest in the commonwealth. Tsongas has also been involved in an array of civic organizations, including the committee that manages the Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

"I would like to express my appreciation to IAPAC's membership and board members for their support of my campaign for United States Congress,” said Tsongas. “I strongly support IAPAC's mission to promote the Iranian American community and will work to promote the substantial accomplishments that Iranian Americans have contributed to our great society. Together, we will work to guard against all forms of discrimination against Iranian Americans and for the protection of civil liberties for all Americans."

IAPAC celebrates the hard fought victory of Niki Tsongas in Massachusett’s 5th Congressional District. She is the first woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress in more than 35 years. Tsongas has dedicated her entire life to serving others and will uphold the exceptional legacy of her late husband and Representative Meehan.

IAPAC is a registered bipartisan political action committee that contributes to candidates for public office who are attuned to the domestic concerns of the Iranian American community. IAPAC focuses exclusively on domestic policy issues such as civil rights and immigration, and it encourages Americans of Iranian descent to actively participate in civic affairs.
