Candidate U.S. House of Representatives (D-6th/MD)
Milad Pooran is a physician who has served his community and country as both a civilian doctor and as a member of the US Air Force Medical Corps. A product of the Maryland public education system, he earned his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Maryland.
After completing his residency, Dr. Pooran transitioned to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda to complete his clinical fellowships in allergy/immunology and critical care. While at the NIH, he immersed himself in HIV related research, working with and learning from some of the premier scientists in the world. Dr. Pooran went on to work in the Office of the Secretary for Health and Human Services, tackling national biodefense issues as well as H1N1 pandemic influenza. For the last two years, Dr. Pooran has served in private practice as a critical care physician and treats veterans at the VA Hospital serving western Maryland.
Dr. Pooran has spent past 13 years in the Military as an Air Force flight surgeon and currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (USAF, Reserve). During his service, he has deployed and provided support for flying and humanitarian operations on all seven continents and served as a combat medic and operational flight surgeon. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Dr. Pooran is running as a Democrat in the newly formed 6th Congressional District of Maryland. The new 6th District comprises all of Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties, Frederick City and its southern “suburbs,” and the western third of Montgomery, including Poolesville, Gaithersburg, and parts of Potomac. The new 6th District has one of the highest percentages of immigrant voters of any non-minority-majority districts in the country.
Dr. Pooran’s profile is an excellent fit for the new 6th District:
- He has suburban roots, but is the only candidate who lives in the western part of the district, the old 6th.
- He is a military veteran with combat experience, which will be very important to more conservative primary and general voters in the west.
- The new MD-6 has one of the highest concentrations of immigrant voters of any non-minority-majority districts in the country. His story will resonate with those voters in a way that none of the other candidates can match.
- In a year when being an establishment politician is likely to be a handicap, he is truly an outsider.
