Iranian American Know Your Rights Campaign to Hold Press Briefing in San Francisco

Washington, DC - The Iranian American Know Your Rights Campaign is gearing up for its second press briefing on August 3rd at the National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement (NLSCA), headquartered in San Francisco, California. Due to the success of the launch in Southern California on July 2nd, coalition members intend to bring the campaign to Northern California – continuing their efforts to educate the Iranian American community and the American community at large about the threat of discrimination and the available resources to prevent such inequities.

Spearheaded by the NLSCA, the Iranian American Know Your Rights Campaign comprises a coalition of national organizations. The purpose of the campaign is to educate Iranian Americans on their civil rights and liberties as well as to educate mainstream America about the Iranian American community. As a means of increasing awareness of discrimination within the Iranian American community, the August 3rd press briefing will target a wide range of Iranian American media. The briefing agenda will include an in-depth look at recently documented stories as well as a segment dealing with legal rights education to prevent further discrimination. Resources will be available to help people deal with the ever-present issues of new employer and government profiling. Also on the agenda is the pronouncement of a major achievement of the Know Your Rights Campaign: H.Res.367 condemning bigotry and discrimination against Iranian Americans.

At the urging of the Iranian American Political Action Committee, Congressman Marty Meehan (D-5th/MA) and Congressman Christopher Shays (R-4th/CT) introduced resolution H.Res.367 on July 19, 2005 in the House of Representatives. The resolution condemns bigotry and discrimination against Iranian Americans and encourages them to share their experiences with local, state and federal elected officials as well as others in their community to end stereotypes, correct misconceptions and convey instances of abuse against the Iranian American community. It is a response to documented reports of discrimination targeting the Iranian American community, which, according to civil rights and liberties organizations, has increased over the past six months.
