Iranian American Friends of Christopher Shays Host Fundraising Event

Greenwich, CT - On Friday, March 10, 2006, Iranian American friends of Shays for Congress hosted a fundraising reception for U.S. Congressman Christopher Shays (R-4th/CT) at the home of IAPAC Trustee Mr. Sassan Ghahramani.

Congressman Shays, a moderate Republican, has served the 4th District of Connecticut since 1987. During the course of his tenure as a member of Congress, he has gradually assumed a position of national leadership on many issues, including transparent and honest government. Much of Congressman Shays’ work concerns the most important issues facing Congress today. For example, Congressman Shays has led the fight to reform the nation’s campaign finance laws and has been a tireless advocate for greater efficiency in government, protecting the environment and enhancing our nation's security.

Mr. Ghahramani began the evening by thanking Congressman Shays for sponsoring House Resolution 367 (H.Res.367) in support of the Iranian American community. In July of 2005, Congressman Shays and Congressman Marty Meehan (D-5th/MA) introduced H.Res.367 condemning discrimination and bigotry against Iranian Americans. The resolution is in response to documented reports of discrimination against Iranian Americans and marks the first time the U.S. House of Representatives has acknowledged the Iranian American community and its significant contributions to the social and economic fabric of American society.

Congressman Shays began his remarks by noting the importance of open and honest debate concerning the issues facing the country and refraining from politics of personal attacks, which has marred American political discourse in the past several years. Congressman Shays then explained that he makes a concerted effort to work with Democrats on legislative matters and seeks to have bipartisan sponsorship of legislation that he introduces in the House of Representatives. “I often work closely with Congressman Marty Meehan on government reform and civil liberty issues and with Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney on national security issues,” Shays stated.

Congressman Shays and his wife, Betsi, spoke with guests for approximately two hours and listened to their concerns on issues facing the 4th District of Connecticut.

Congressman Shays currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Government Reform Committee, the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. He also serves as a member of the Homeland Security and Financial Services Committees.
