IAPAC Trustee Hosts Fundraising Event for Congressman Christopher Shays

Greenwich, CT - On Friday, April 25th, IAPAC Trustee Sassan Ghahramani held a fundraising reception for Congressman Christopher Shays (R-CT) at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut.

A leader among centrist Republicans, Congressman Shays is an advocate of socially moderate views. He worked with the Clinton Administration to establish the successful COPS program and continues to lead the charge to end racial profiling and sexual discrimination in the workplace. Congressman Shays is the first sponsor of House Resolution 476, condemning discrimination and bigotry against Iranian Americans. The resolution acknowledges the diversity of the Iranian American community and their contributions to the social and economic fabric of American society. In addition, he is a cosponsor of the Protection of Civil Liberties Act of 2005 (H.R. 1310, 109th Congress) – Provisions from this legislation were included in the “Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007.” The provisions establish a strong, independent Privacy and Civil Liberties Board with subpoena power. [Public Law 110-53, signed August 3, 2007].

Mr. Ghahramani began the evening by thanking Congressman Shays for his three decades of public service and his advocacy on behalf of the people of 4th District of Connecticut. "As an independent, I may not always agree with Chris' position on every issue, but I have always truly admired his integrity, leadership qualities, support for human rights, and ability to work in a bipartisan manner for the betterment of our district and country," Mr. Ghahramani explained.

In his remarks, Congressman Shays said that that he makes a concentrated effort to work with Democrats on legislative matters and seeks to have bipartisan sponsorship of legislation that he works on in the House of Representatives. He and his wife, Betsi, spoke with guests for approximately two hours and listened to their concerns on numerous topics from the economy to U.S policy towards the Middle East.

Congressman Shays is a senior member of the Government Reform Committee, Ranking Member of its Subcommittee on National Security and a member of the Homeland Security and Financial Services Committees.
