U.S. Senate (D-MI)
Gary Peters Sr. is the junior United States Senator from Michigan serving since 2015. In the 116th Congress Peters serves on the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, Senate Armed Services Committee, the Joint Economic Committee, and as Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
A member of the Democratic Party, he was the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 14th congressional district from 2013 to 2015. Before his election to Congress, Peters served in the United States Navy Reserve, spent 22 years as an investment advisor, and worked briefly in academia. He was elected to the Rochester Hills City Council in 1991 and represented the 14th district in the Michigan Senate from 1995 to 2002.
Peters is a staunch opponent of President Trump’s travel and refugee bans. He is a co-sponsor of the NO BAN Act (S.1123), which would repeal the President’s Executive Orders and imposes limitations on the Executive Branches authority to suspend or restrict aliens from entering the United States.
