Eric Michael Garcetti was elected Mayor of Los Angeles in May of 2013. He is a former member of theLos Angeles City Council, representing the 13th District. Garcetti served as Council President from 2006 to 2012.
Garcetti was raised in the San Fernando Valley and earned his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University. He studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and the London School of Economics and taught at Occidental College and U.S.C. A fourth generation Angeleno, Garcetti lives in Silver Lake with his wife and one-year-old daughter. He is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy reserve and is an avid jazz pianist and photographer.
Garcetti defeated city Controller Wendy Greuel in a nonpartisan race on May 21, 2013 by a margin of 54 percent to 46 percent. The two candidates were competing in a runoff after no candidate won a majority of the vote in March.
As the mayor of America's second-largest city, Garcetti has pledged to help lead a national push on immigration reform and expanding early childhood education in 2014.
