U.S. House of Representatives (D-4th/MD)
Donna Edwards represents Maryland's 4th congressional district. The district includes Prince George's County as well as parts of Montgomery County, which has a large Iranian American population. Just prior to serving in Congress, she served as the executive director of the Arca Foundation in Washington, DC.
Edwards was sworn in as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 110th Congress in June 2008 and began her first full-term in the 111th Congress in 2009. She serves on the Transportation and Science & Technology Committees.
A proponent of immigration reform and civil liberties, Edwards is a cosponsor of the Dream Act of 2011 and the Border Security, Economic opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. She also cosponsored and voted in support of the USA Freedom Act of 2013, which brings several reforms to key government surveillance programs.
Edwards is an original cosponsor of H.Res.267, a resolution in honor of the Iranian New Year. In addition, she is an original co-sponsor of H.Res130, acknowledging the Cyrus Cylinder as a symbol of respect for human rights and religious tolerance and commemorating the cylinder’s tour in the United States.
Edwards served as an honorary co-host of the opening reception to celebrate A Thousand Years of the Persian Books exhibition at Library of Congress in March of 2013.
