Hunter supports the USA Patriot Act, having voted to make it permanent in December 2005. He voted "yes" to allow the President & Attorney General to authorize electronic surveillance without a court order to acquire foreign intelligence information, after certifying that the surveillance is directed
at the acquisition of communications of foreign agents.
Hunter believes that the U.S. has released too many prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. "If anything, we've been too liberal with the release of terrorists," said Hunter at a Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire. "We've actually sent back to the battlefield or sent back to Afghanistan some of
the people that we thought were no longer a threat. Some of those people have shown up on the battlefield bearing arms against our soldiers and sailors and airmen and Marines, back on the battlefield after we sent them back."

Immigration
Hunter was given a 100% rating by Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), reflecting his strong support for immigration restrictions. He opposes amnesty for undocumented immigrants and has voted in favor of building a fence along the Mexican border.
"This administration has a case of the slows on border enforcement. As long as you've got a revolving door and you have no border, it's not just an immigration problem, it's a homeland security problem," said Hunter at a Republican presidential debate in South Carolina. "We need to build the border fence. We need to have a Border Patrol which is big enough to get the job done, and we need to be able to ask people when they want to come into America, knock on the front door, because the back door is going to be closed."
Hunter voted to pass a bill that would require hospitals to gather and report information on possible illegal aliens before hospitals can be reimbursed for treating them. He was a cosponsor of the Enforcement First Immigration Act of 2005, which, if passed, would impose sanctions for acts violating the oath or renunciation and allegiance taken by naturalized U.S. citizens. The legislation also makes citizens subject to a $10,000 fine and/or imprisonment for one year for using the passport of foreign state or voting in a foreign election.

Iran
Hunter believes that Iran is walking down the path of building a nuclear weapon. "They've got now about a thousand centrifuges. They claim they've got 3,000. At some point, we may have to preempt that target. If we do, it should be done hopefully with allies but perhaps by the U.S. alone," said Hunter at Republican presidential debate in Michigan. Hunter supports strong economic sanctions on Iran. He cosponsored the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act, which strengthens the sanctions implemented by the 1996 Iran and Libya Sanctions Act.
