"I want to thank the members of the Iranian American Political Action Committee for their support of my reelection campaign for Congress. I am proud to cosponsor legislation condemning bigotry, violence and discrimination against Iranian-Americans, and will continue to work hard in support of IAPAC’s mission of promoting the great contributions of their community to this city and to our country. I look forward to opportunities to continue working together with IAPAC on issues of relevance and concern to the Iranian-American community and to all our nation’s citizens."
Carolyn Maloney
U.S. House of Representatives (D-14th/NY)

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney represents the 14th district in New York City. Her district contains many of the City's most historically well-known neighborhoods, including most of Manhattan’s East Side and Queens. After serving for ten years on the New York City Council, Maloney defeated a 14-year incumbent in her first race for Congress in 1992. She was reelected in 2006 with 84% of the vote and has never lost an election. Maloney serves on the House Financial Services Committee, the Government Reform Committee, and is the ranking House Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee. The Government Reform Committee is the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

A proponent of civil liberties, Maloney is an original cosponsor of House Resolution 476, condemning discrimination and bigotry against Iranian Americans. The resolution acknowledges the diversity of the Iranian American community and their contributions to the social and economic fabric of American society. In addition, she is a sponsor of the Protection of Civil Liberties Act (H.R. 1310, 109th Congress) – Provisions from this legislation were included in the “Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007.” The provisions establish a strong, independent Privacy and Civil Liberties Board with subpoena power. [Public Law 110-53, signed August 3, 2007].

In October of 2007, Congresswoman Maloney contacted the Department of Defense to inquire about the comments allegedly made by Debra Cagan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Coalition Affairs. According to the newspaper Daily Mail, a group of six members of the British Parliament met with Cagan in Washington in September to discuss coalition efforts regarding Iraq and Iran. In the middle of the discussion, Cagan allegedly said, "I hate all Iranians." In her letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Congresswoman Maloney requested that the Department of Defense clarify what was said at the meeting and commented that such alleged comments “would be insulting to Iranian Americans, and to those living in Iran who would welcome democratic reforms.”
