"I would like to express my appreciation to
IAPAC's membership and board members for their support of my campaign for
United States Congress. I strongly support IAPAC's mission to promote the
Iranian American community and will work to promote the substantial
accomplishments that Iranian Americans have contributed to our great
society. Together, we will work to guard against all forms of
discrimination against Iranian Americans and for the protection of civil
liberties for all Americans." |

Tsongas, wife of the late U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas, was elected to Congress
in October of 2007 special election for Massachusetts' vacant 5th
Congressional District. An accomplished attorney, Tsongas has a law degree
from Boston University and started Lowell's first all-female law practice.
She has spent decades working as Director of External Affairs at Middlesex
Community College -- the largest in the commonwealth. Tsongas has also been
involved in an array of civic organizations, including the committee that
manages the Tsongas Arena in Lowell.
On July 1, 2007, incumbent 5th District Representative Marty
Meehan resigned his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives to become
the next chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. In
accordance with state law, Massachusetts held a special election to fill the
vacancy on October 16, 2007.
As the proud daughter of an Air Force Colonel, Tsongas grew up on bases all
across the U.S., Germany and Japan, an experience that taught her about
sacrifice, the importance of family, and the need to understand and listen
to cultures and ideas that are not always her own.
Tsongas has broad support throughout her district. She has committed her
life to serving others and will uphold the exceptional legacy of both her
late husband and Representative Meehan.
