Thomas Davis III
U.S. Congress (R-11th/VA)
Congressman Davis represents the 11th District
of Virginia. Prior to his election to Congress,
Davis was the chief elected official in Fairfax
County, the eleventh most populous municipality
with the second largest county budget in the United
States. Davis has earned a reputation among his
constituents, colleagues and the media as a strong
advocate of federal employees and contractors
and as an expert in federal procurement policy.
Davis also serves as one of four co-chairs of
the Information Technology Working Group, a group
he founded to promote a better understanding of
issues important to the computer and technology
industries.
Davis' legislative accomplishments were recognized
in January 2003, when he was elected to chair
the House Government Reform Committee for the
108th Congress. The Committee on Government Reform
is the main investigative committee in the U.S.
House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction
to investigate any federal program and any matter
with federal policy implications.
A strong proponent of immigrant rights and civil
liberties, Davis voted in favor of extending Section
245 (i) of Immigration and Nationality Act by
four months. Section 245 (i) allowed certain individuals
who are pursuing permanent residency in the United
States to remain with their families while their
applications were being adjudicated. In addition,
Davis supported the Otter
Amendment, which aimed to prevent so-called
"sneak and peek" searches from being
conducted by amending the USA Patriot Act.
